Liturgical Ministry
|
| Lectors |
|
| Our liturgy is greatly enriched by the
participation of lectors, eucharistic ministers, acolytes and altar
servers, who bring their special gifts to Catholic worship. Here is
a brief description of each. |
|
| A lector, or reader, assists by proclaiming
the first and second readings from Sacred Scripture. Lectors may also
provide the responsorial psalm, in the absence of a cantor. Historically,
this was considered a ėminor order,î exercised in preparation for
the priesthood. In contemporary usage, it is regarded as a ministry,
that is, a public service provided by members of the faith community,
the Body of Christ on earth. |

| Eucharistic Ministers |
|
| Those who assist in the distribution of
Holy Communion are called eucharistic(from a Greek word meaning ėthanksgivingî)
ministers, and are especially helpful when large congregations must
be accommodated. As extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist, they
also make the Blessed Sacrament available to those unable to attend
mass. |

| Altar Servers |
|
An altar server assists the presider at
mass, most importantly with the opening and closing prayers, the lavabo
(washing of hands), lighting and carrying candles, and stewardship
of the wine and water at mass. In the ninth century, young boys were
given some of the duties of acolytes, one of the minor ministries
(perhaps explaining the confusion in terms), and these responsibilities
were extended to girls in 1983. This ministry is open to fifth graders
and older students. Please use the following link for the current altar server assignments:

| Ushers and Greeters |
|
| When you arrive for mass, they greet you
with a smiling face and welcome you. On occasion, they may assist
you in finding a seat. They collect the offerings during mass and
may even help you find your way around the church. These people are
charged with extending hospitality to parishioners and visitors to
Christ the King Church at every mass. Currently, there is no Greeter/Usher
list or schedule. If you are interested in participating as a greet/usher,
contact one of the greeters/ushers before mass or call the parish
office at 615.292.2884. |

| Sacristans |
|
| Working in the background of every mass,
Sacristans ensure there are sufficient supply of hosts and wine for
communion. Their job not only entails setting up the altar, host and
wine, but also to properly clean the altar and utensils after mass.
In addition, they monitor and order supplies as needed. Upon request,
they will perform these duties for special occasions such as sacramental,
funeral and wedding masses. If you are interested in serving as a
Sacristan, please contact the parish office at 615.292.2884. |
