Homework
All second graders will have an assignment book, which we
will use daily for communication. I will help the students write
down their assignments each day. The purpose of homework in 2nd
grade is to build responsibility and study habits, review
skills/concepts, and keep the parent informed about what we are
learning in school. Please check the assignment book daily for
assignments and initial the book when the work is done. This is
also a good place to write a note to me
about the assignment. Typically homework will be a worksheet or
workbook page reviewing a concept we worked on in school that
day. These should take 10-20 minutes. Please let me know if
it takes much longer for your child. If your child needed lots of
help or reteaching to do the assignment, please write "with help" at
the top of the paper. This will not affect the grade, but will
help me judge whether I need to present the material in a different
way. Occasionally there will be special projects or book reports.
These will be assigned at least a week before they are due.
Students should read daily for at least ten minutes. This
develops good reading habits and practices skills we are learning at
school. This can be independent reading or reading aloud to you
depending on your student's skill level. Please make a note to me
each week in the assignment book about what your child is reading at
home and I will encourage him/her at school.
We will be learning 5 Word Wall words (sight words) each
week for 20 weeks. These will be sent home in a ziploc bag on
Mondays.
Students should practice their Word Wall words at home until they
recognize them on sight and can spell them. They will be tested
on their words at
regular intervals and will receive a reading grade for this. New
words will be added to the bag each Monday until there are 100 words.
