Policies and Procedures

5th Grade Homework Policy

Homework may be assigned Monday through Thursday evenings.  Occasionally an assignment will be given over the weekend.  It should take students approximately 50 minutes to complete their work. Allow for a little extra time to study for tests and working on projects.  It is important that students have a quiet area that is free from distraction in which to do their homework.  Please be sure that your child has the necessary materials to complete his/her assignments.  In order for me to effectively assess students’ learning, it is important that they do the work on their own, trying their best, before asking for assistance.

All homework is to be turned in by 8:15 on the day that it is due.  If a student does not have their assignment(s) completed, he/she will have time during study hall (after lunch/during recess).  The assignment(s) will be marked late with a deduction of 10 points.  Any assignment turned in the day after the due date will have an automatic grade of 69%.  Work not completed within 24 hours of the due date/time will not be accepted and will be given a zero for a grade.

I will ask a student to resubmit any illegible and/or sloppy work.  The student will then have until the end of the next day to hand in the assignment. Any work not resubmitted will receive 0%.

Note:  The above policy applies to absent work also.  Any missed work should be completed in the time allowed (see pg. 6 in student handbook).

Conduct / Effort Grades

Grading students’ conduct and effort will be done with the help of a behavior tracking sheet.  As rule number 5 states:  Obey these rules when not in our classroom.  This includes other classes, lunch, hallway, recess, etc.  Should a student be given a warning from another teacher, his/her card will be moved from its pocket into the appropriate consequence pocket.  It will also be recorded on the behavior tracking sheet.  Each quarter, students begin with 100 points.  At the end of the quarter, the total points taken will be added up from the behavior tracking sheet.  The total points left will be the grade he/she will receive for that quarter.  Grades are given as follows:  85-100 points = Good; 65-84 = Satisfactory; 0-64= Unsatisfactory
Reminder:  Students with a “U” could be placed on an academic contract.

Note: Any warnings and/or points taken from the student from Specials classes (P.E., Spanish, Computer, Art, etc.) will be deducted from total points at mid-term and the end of quarter.

Daily Planning and Organization

Fifth grade uses a daily planner for organization and information.  Each student is given a 1 inch binder that is to be used throughout the year.  The daily planner is part of this binder.  Each morning students write assignments for the day, with due dates included, into their planner.  The binder is organized in such a way that each subject and/or other information has its own section. Any notes or items to remember, such as when tests are scheduled, field trips, etc., are written in the planner.  There is also a monthly calendar inserted at the front of the binder that will include due dates for long range projects and other dates to remember.  Test dates, field trips, etc., also may be written on the monthly calendar.  Any newsletters, field trip forms, etc. that are not included in the Friday folders will be placed in the binders.   Students are to take their white binder home each day for parents to look at.  This gives parents an insight into what is happening in our classroom.  If a planner has a sticker or a stamp for that day, this means that I have looked at the planner to make sure it is being used and written in correctly.  As the year progresses, I will spend less time reviewing the students planners and checking to see that their binder is being used correctly.  My goal is to have each student organizing himself/herself on a daily basis.
