Why do people make art?

(from the 1st through 8th grade students at Christ the King)

1/ For functional objects: used for something, such as pottery, rugs, etc.
2/ For beauty:  surrounds us with beauty (beauty is in the eye of the beholder!).
3/ For a narrative: tells a story or teaches a lesson.
4/ For a record: describes/records reality or perception of reality – a  “snapshot” of a moment in time.
5/ To express feelings: to bring the emotions out.
6/ For a memorial: celebrates/ honors/ remembers a person or event.
7/ To make the viewer feel a certain way as they look at it, such as comforted or upset/moved.
8/ For a status symbol: owning art is a status symbol for some people.
9/ For a cultural tradition: preserves a culture’s history.
10/ As a profession: to make a living.
11/ For fun!
12/ To create something in the world.
13/ To become famous or leave a legacy.
14/ To try something new.
15/ To share opinions or ideas about something.
16/ To connect with nature.
17/ To connect past with present and future.
18/ To strengthen wrist muscles.
19/ To give to others.
20/ Because they like the “parts of art” (line, shape, color, texture, space, value, form).
21/ To live in: architecture.
22/ Because it is their passion.
23/ Because it makes others happy to see it.
24/ To catch criminals (create sketches of suspects).
25/ To show courtroom proceedings.
26/ Because they like green.
27/ To advertise a business.
28/ To inform people about an issue.
29/ To honor someone, such as a historical figure.
30/ To glorify or elevate a religious figure or place.
31/ To celebrate.
32/ To decorate.
