Enrichment Enrollment Process 2010-2011
1. Observation/Recommendation Students
who may benefit from Enrichment services must first be “flagged” for
observation & screening. Recommendations may be made to the
principal and/or the Enrichment instructor. This process can be
initiated through:
- Teacher observations;
- Administration recommendations; and/or
- Test scores from Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS).
2. Placement Consideration for the Enrichment Program is contingent upon instructor availability.
There may be times during the year that the instructor does not have
any openings to meet with students; if this is the case, students will
not be placed into classes but may still go through the evaluation
process. Students are guaranteed placement if they have obtained formal
gifted certification (see #4).
3. Formal Screening* When appropriate consideration is given to recommendations and observations, the student will be given a formal screen. The
Screening Assessment for Gifted Elementary and Middle School Students-2
(SAGES-2) is used by the school administration, Enrichment instructor,
and the student’s teacher to identify students age 5-14 who may be
gifted in academics and reasoning. Students who are screened as “gifted” will be offered Enrichment opportunities, if placement spaces are available.
*AFTER SCREENING, STUDENTS ARE ELIGIBLE (BUT NOT GUARANTEED) FOR ENRICHMENT SERVICE.
4. Formal Gifted Certification To be guaranteed individual Enrichment instruction, the student must be certified as “Gifted.” Gifted certification testing is only required once while the student is at CKS. This certification can be obtained in two ways:
- Through Metropolitan Nashville Public School System at no cost
- Private testing services
5. Individual Education Program (IEP) Meeting Once
gifted certification is obtained, a student support team composed of
the grade-level teacher(s), the principal, and the Enrichment
instructor will meet to establish Enrichment learning goals and
objectives for the student. Traditionally, IEP meetings take when
school begins in the fall and at the end of the school year to review
progress from the year and to outline goals for the next school year
6. Participation in Enrichment Activities
Once
an Individual Education Program is in place, students will begin
meeting with the Enrichment instructor individually and in small groups
on a regular basis. Students will be exposed to a wide range of
academic activities that enrich and extend their current curriculum, as
well as extracurricular and multi-disciplinary lessons.
Questions
can be directed to Principal Christine Caron Gebhardt or
Enrichment Instructor Gerrilu Linton.
