Does My Child Qualify for Reading Resource Services?

The Reading Resource Program is designed to enable students with special needs in the area of language arts to have a successful school experience.  Language arts include reading, writing and spelling.  Students are referred to the program after an educational evaluation has been completed by a licensed professional, which certifies the student's need for special services.  This need may be due to a specific learning disability or academic giftedness.   Students are admitted to the program as the resource teacher's schedule allows.  Students already in the program receive priority in scheduling when a new school year begins.

If a child appears to have a need for special services, the parent, classroom teacher, resource teacher or principal may request a Support Team Meeting (S-team).  The purpose of this meeting is to discuss any concerns that the parent or teacher may have, and then decide on a course of action.  This may be a home or school intervention, or referral for an educational evaluation outside of school.  The school will provide information for evaluation through the public school system or private psychological examiner.
After an evaluation has been completed, the parent must give the school a copy of the evaluation report, and then the team will reconvene to determine the next steps.  If the student was found to have a special need according to state definitions, the team will write an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) to specify goals, modifications, accommodations, and services the student will receive.  Parents and teachers receive a copy of the IEP and a copy goes into the student's confidential file.  Students are re-evaluated every three years according to state guidelines.

Each year that a student qualifies for an IEP, the principal, resource teacher, homeroom teacher, and parents will have an IEP meeting in the beginning of the school year to plan and write an IEP for that year.  At the end of the school year, the team reconvenes to evaluate progress, determine the success of the IEP, and make recommendations for the following year.  The team may also reconvene anytime during the year that one of the team members, including parents, finds it necessary.

Christ the King School does not offer speech or occupational therapy, but will assist parents by making referrals for those services if needed.
